APD has asked us to be on the lookout for this truck, which is being used for vehicle break-ins. The tag number is believed to be RAZ1280. If you see this vehicle, call 911 followed by the EASP at 404-954-1568.
APD has requested that we be on the lookout for a black Dodge Challenger, likely a 2016-2018 model. It has been used in conjunction with a number of vehicle break-ins in this area. Should you see suspicious activity associated with this car, call 911 followed by the EASP at 404-954-1568.
The EASP has learned that Zone 6 had six officers reassigned this week. It's not clear if this is a result of changes being requested by new Public Safety Commissioner George Turner, or some other reason. Regardless of why this has occurred, we are concerned that the continued loss of APD officers is having a direct impact on the ability to keep citizens safe in our community. In effect, the communities of Zone 6 are being penalized by losing officers to other Zones where crime is higher. When even the officers on the school police force are making more money than the ones patrolling our streets, something is drastically wrong. We encourage you to contact Councilperson Archibong and others on city council to make it clear to them that funding better pay for officers must be the city's highest priority. And if the response is that funding is not available, take a look at your property tax bill and think about the huge tax increases that most of us have been forced to pay in the past few years. I think most of us would rather attract and retain officers with a higher rate of pay than pay overtime rates to a shrinking number of officers.
As we approach the period of the year where crime has increased significantly the past couple of years, take a few minutes to consider joining the EASP. In the short run, it is our easiest way to put more officers on the street, particularly ones that are familiar with our community and will be up to speed immediately. Sunday is the last day to join the EASP for the upcoming quarter that goes through the holiday season. After that, the next time to join will be January 1st. The East Atlanta Security Patrol (EASP) is offering memberships to residents of the East Atlanta community through September 30th. To join, you must be a City of Atlanta resident. Enrollment for the October 1 – December 31 quarter is open through Sunday. This is the last opportunity to join the EASP this year and help increase safety in our community for the holiday season.
This is also a great opportunity to invite your neighbors to become members, as patrol time is largely allocated based on where members live. And more members means more patrol hours for the entire East Atlanta community. Membership in the EASP allows you to request extra patrols whenever you're away from home, including Fall Break, Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season. By submitting a simple form, members receive extra patrols at their homes from both the EASP officers and APD officers. Membership in the EASP costs $50 per quarter, with a one-time charge of $15 for administrative fees and an EASP yard sign. Half-price memberships are available for Seniors age 65 and above. Memberships are offered for 3, 6 and 12 months. To become a member, visit the EASP website at www.easecuritypatrol.com or call 404-954-1568. The EASP, starting its thirteenth year of operation, is an effort to enhance public safety in East Atlanta. The EASP employs off-duty Zone Six police officers to perform additional patrols within Beat 612, which is the police designation for the East Atlanta community. All patrol officers are armed, in uniform, with full arrest powers. All vehicles are clearly marked on both sides with the EASP emblem or use marked APD police vehicles. Most EASP officers already patrol or live in the East Atlanta community, giving them knowledge of the people and streets, and have a vested interest in keeping our neighborhood safe. In addition to extra police patrols in our community, the EASP works closely with the Atlanta Police Department and other security patrols to share information about crime threats or new patterns of crime. When appropriate, the EASP shares this information with the community via the EASP website, Facebook and Twitter. The EASP also addresses quality of life issues, which can range from abandoned cars to noise complaints, and difficult neighbors to missing street signs. There was a robbery this morning around midnight in East Atlanta. Apparently a man was shot in the leg while trying to assist his friend who was being robbed. Fox News covered this story this morning. We will post more information if we learn anything pertinent.
Coming on the heels of the April 1 annexation of a large chunk of the Braeburn Circle area, another annexation is on target to take effect on October 1st. Should nothing derail this change, the East Atlanta Security Patrol will allow households on the map below to become members effective October 1st. Right now, there are a couple of weeks between final City Council approval on September 17th and the date that EASP service will begin, so we do request that everyone wait until those approvals are final before signing up. While Willow Place and Lochland Court will have all properties located within the Atlanta city limits, that is not true of Lochland. Unfortunately the EASP can’t service the remainder of Lochland as long as those properties remain in unincorporated Dekalb County.
In order to increase police presence in East Atlanta during the fall and the holiday season, the East Atlanta Security Patrol (EASP) is offering the month of September free to new and returning members! With only four entry dates per year, you must normally wait until October 1st to become a member, but with Labor Day approaching and lots of new families moving into the neighborhood this summer, there have been a lot of requests to allow entry before October 1st. This is also a great opportunity to invite your neighbors to become members, as patrol time is largely allocated based on where members live.
Membership in the EASP also means that you may request extra patrols when you're away from home, including Labor Day Weekend, Thanksgiving, the December holidays and New Year’s. By submitting a simple form, members receive extra patrols at their homes by both the EASP officers and APD officers. Membership in the EASP is $50 per quarter, with a one-time charge of $15 for administrative fees and an EASP yard sign. Memberships are offered for 3, 6 and 12 months. If you join under this special offer, all memberships will officially start on October 1st, after the free month ends. This offer ends on September 3rd. If you have any questions, call us at 404-954-1568 or drop a note to easp610@gmail.com. In addition to extra police patrols in our community, the EASP works closely with the Atlanta Police Department and other security patrols to share information about crime threats or new patterns of crime. When appropriate, the EASP shares this information with the community via the EASP website, Facebook and Twitter. The EASP, now completing its twelfth year of operation, is an effort to enhance public safety in East Atlanta. The EASP employs off-duty Zone Six police officers to perform additional patrols within Beat 612, which is the police designation for the East Atlanta community. All patrol officers are armed, in uniform, with full arrest powers. Two burglaries have been reported today, August 17th. One was around 10:30 - 11:00 this morning at 1548 Van Vleck.
Entry was through the front door, which my have been unlocked. A TV and PlayStation were taken. The other burglary was at 691 Clifton sometime during the day today through a rear window. Credit cards were taken but other items were ignored. If you live in the areas of these two burglaries, please check your cameras and see if you can identify anything that might be helpful. If you do, call the EASP at 404-954-1568 or email easp610@gmail.com. APD is reporting on July 26th at 2:00 p.m. that Adrian Merritts has been arrested. He was identified during an attempted package theft on Marbut earlier this week. It is possible that he has other warrants pending in Atlanta or other jurisdictions, so it remains to be seen how much jail time Mr. Merritts will be getting.
There was a burglary on Gracewood between Gresham and Brownwood this afternoon shortly after 4:00. If you saw anything or find anything on your camera, please email us at easp610@gmail.com. As continues to be typical of almost every burglary, the entry point was a window. If you haven't enhanced your window security, be sure to do so as soon as possible. If you have an alarm with sensors on your windows, be sure to test the alarm to make sure the sensors still work. Alarms should not be your primary source of defense, but generally are a good way to prevent the burglar from staying long, and do act as a deterrent in some cases. They also alert you and your neighbors to a possible crime.
APD is reporting to be on the lookout for a purple 1998 Toyota Corolla with tag CIC5673. This vehicle is being used in the commission of vehicle break-ins and package thefts. Vehicle break-ins have been a huge problem of late. The reason they are so popular is because they are so successful. Do not store any items of value in your car, especially when you are home. Take the time to bring in laptops, guns or any of the other valuables that continue to appear in the police reports. Package thefts are also a major problem, so please explore all possible alternatives to delivery at your home. More companies are allowing for delivery to places like drugstores, Fedex and the UPS Store. Another option is having things delivered to an office or a neighbor who is home during the day. You can also alert a neighbor to walk over after your camera catches a package delivery, or when texted by the delivery service. This problem is not going away, so try to find a way to deal with this that best fits your situation. |
